Chamber honors Allex, ‘Mr. Harlingen’

HARLINGEN — It was a fitting tribute for the man they call “Mr. Harlingen.”

The Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce honored longtime Chamber official David Allex this week by naming its board room the “David E. Allex Board Room.”

Allex spent 35 years with the Chamber, 12 of them as its head.

“This is going to be a bit of a surprise for him, but guess what, this is about you, Mr. David Allex,” said Ricky Leal of First Community Bank, the current Chamber board chairman.

Leal spoke of Allex’s hand in reinventing I-69, relocating the West Rail Project and, “hopefully, soon to break ground on the Northern Causeway on South Padre Island, which will have a significant impact on the economy here in our region.

“We know that you were part of the team that went up to Austin years ago and talked those guys into repurposing the Harlingen Airport base into John Connally Technical Institute which today, 50 years later, is TSTC, a place that’s near and dear to my heart, obviously,” Leal said.

Leal also praised Allex for his commitment to convincing a young startup company, Southwest Airlines, to choose Harlingen as a destination, and to become an anchor at Valley International Airport.

“We know that you spent, closer to home, 35 years managing the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce,” Leal continued. “You’re part of this building. And now, your name is literally going to be attached to part of this building.
