HARLINGEN — McAllen. San Benito, Donna, Weslaco, Boggus Stadium …

Wait a minute. Boggus Stadium? What about it?

For the first time in recent memory, spectators — and judges — will pack the stands at Boggus Stadium for the Region 28 UIL Marching Band Contest.

“It’s going to be awesome,” said Ronnie Rios, band director at Harlingen High School.

“This is the first time in modern-day history we’ve had it here,” said Rios, who is also director of music for the Harlingen school district.

The contest, also known as the 74th Annual Pigskin Jubilee, will take place Oct. 22. Families, fans and judges will pack the stands and watch local bands in dashing colors of glistening emerald green, bold red, and blue and white.

The bands from 6A schools will compete at Boggus. Bands from 5A schools and below will compete at Bennie LaPrade Stadium in Donna.

The shows presented in the past have been quite elaborate with such thought-provoking names as “In Transit Above Land and Air” and “Way of the Warrior.”

This year, the Harlingen High School Cardinal Band in bright red will present its show “Fall of Rome” at Boggus for the UIL judges. The Harlingen High School South Hawk Band, decked out in its green uniforms, will give its show “H20.”
