Battle of the robots: Children learn by building tech wonders

HARLINGEN — A chorus of whirring motors rose from the “field,” an enclosure where small robots moved across the floor.

Nearby, other robot aficionados worked rigorously on their projects, placing motors on wheels mounted on metal frames.

“We are building a robot, and it has these claws,” said Jessica Porter, 13, an eighth grader at Rising Scholars Academy in San Benito.

Jessica is one of 65 students from throughout the Valley attending “The Battle of the EV3 and Tetrix Robots” this week at Gutierrez Middle School in Harlingen.

The event, hosted by RGV Robotics, is providing a variety of activities to students ages 6 through 14. A similar camp was held last year for only middle school students.

“We changed it up a little bit this year,” said Edmundo Lopez, career and technology instructor at Gutierrez. “We’re offering it to the smaller kids.”
