SPI expecting new city manager in coming months

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Mayor Barry Patel expects the Island will have a city manager by November.

“From what I hear from the personnel department, is we are getting some very good applicants,” Patel said.

He said he made it vary clear that he is looking for someone with leadership ability to bring projects to City Council and to improve the Island community even more.

“We will be paying this person more money than we have ever done before,” Patel said. “So we are getting some very qualified applicants.”

The city council agreed to pay the next city manager a six figure salary between $125,000 and $150,000.

“We’ve had 55 applicants so far,” Patel said. “And we continue to get more and more applicants.”

He said the process is going very well.

The city lost its last city manager, Bill DiLibero, after he resigned in April.

He had been hired in March of 2014.

In May, the City Council decided to hire an executive search firm to find a new city manager.

This is not the city’s first rodeo with working with executive search firms to find a city manager.

A search firm was also used to hire DiLibero.

Assistant City Manager Darla Jones has been the Interim city manager since DiLibero’s departure.

In May, she was given a pay raise to perform the duties of city manager.

“She has been working very well overseeing the city and its projects,” the mayor said.
