Woman dies in causeway collision

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Police closed down the Island causeway after a two-car crash yesterday morning that left one person dead.

Janet Evelyn Goggan, 55, a Laguna Vista resident, was found dead in her car when police arrived at the accident.

Goggan was killed when her Mercedes Benz and a Ford utility van collided on the eastbound lanes of the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge, authorities said.

The causeway was shut down on both sides until emergency crews were able to arrive at the scene.

The eastbound lanes remained closed for hours and the traffic was backed up to Port Isabel.

Motorists stranded on the bridge during the investigation of the accident were being turned around back to Port Isabel.

“There were people waiting three to four hours to get to the Island,” Port Isabel Police Chief Wally Gonzalez said.

Texas Department of Transportation officials said the rail and deck of the causeway were not compromised by the force of the crash. The agency said the Department of Public Safety was recreating the scene of the accident.

Police were still assisting traffic to the Island last night.

DPS Lt. Johnny Hernandez said the department is still investigating the accident.
