Harlingen police have charged a Mercedes man with intoxication manslaughter for the weekend accident that left one man dead.

Jim Henry Cavazos, 43, of Mercedes, was hospitalized Sunday afternoon after police say he drove his speeding Mazda southbound on 3rd Street at 3:30 p.m. and slammed into a Ford Taurus at the intersection of Van Buren.

Today Cavazos was formally charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second degree felony. In his mugshot he is seen wearing a hospital gown and an arm sling. His bond is set at $100,000.

Elisha Elizondo, a 32-year-old pharmacist according to family members, was in the Taurus and died at the scene.

Police say the force of the impact was so strong the Elizondo’s vehicle was pushed 50 feet past the intersection and the side of the car was pushed to the middle of the sedan.
