School board receives update on five-year plane

SAN BENITO — It’s all part of Superintendent Dr. Adrian Vega’s five-year plan to get the district on a straight track to success.

School board members and the public last night heard an update on the facilities portion of the Re-Imagine 2021 five-year Strategic Plan.

According to the plan, the facilities portion tackles buildings and operations.

School officials say they have made great strides where facilities are concerned.

Representatives from the facilities committee updated the school board with where the district is as it tackles the goals set by several committees in the summer.

Major priorities

According to the plan, the district’s plan was to utilize the efficiency audit, prioritize reported items and enlist the maintenance and energy departments to target and complete tasks addressed.

The goal is to recognize the issues and fix the problems.

As of today, the committee has sought proposals to fix the roof at Dr. Garza Elementary. It has been in need of repair for some time.

A new roof would cost the district more than $800,000. However, committee members have decided to seek proposals on the use of Duralast, a pre-fabricated material that is used to fix roofs.

It would cost the district about $398,000

Other items in this area consist of repairs to various items in school facilities including heating and cooling systems.

Technology quality

The district will expand the quality of technology infrastructure to accommodate emerging technologies that support academic innovation and technology integration into teaching and learning to prepare students for the 21st century.

In response, the district has begun conducting surveys on every campus, using the curriculum and efficiency to compile data and has visited various campuses to assess staff needs.

The next step would be to gather a list of current needs and utilize funding and other resources to meet those needs.

The district will combine the efforts of the maintenance and energy departments to develop and implement a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan.

The goal is to establish a comprehensive maintenance program to correct deficiencies.

As of today, maintenance has provided training, identified safety manuals and implemented check lists for equipment and inspections.

As previously promised, the districts leadership team will provide a monthly update on the different aspects of the plan at each regular meeting.

Those topics include curriculum and instruction, finance, facilities, pre-kindergarten through graduate school, communications and public relations.

These were all the parts of the Re-Imagine 2021 Strategic Plan approved this past summer.
