A one-vehicle accident on the city’s east side Tuesday afternoon left a man and woman dead.

Sergeant Maria Montalvo of the Texas Department of Public Safety said the accident happened when the driver of the vehicle lost control and it crashed.

Late Tuesday, she said the driver was Martha Itzel Martinez Garza, 18, of San Benito, and the passenger was Jose Guadalupe Camacho, 18.

The accident happened at the 700 block of East Vermillion Road.

“A white Chevy Malibu was travelling eastbound on Houston Road approaching North Vermillion Road. The driver lost control of the vehicle, went airborne, struck a utility pole and came to a final rest,” Montalvo said.

Montalvo said the victims were killed on impact, and both were pronounced dead at the scene. No factors contributing to the accident have been determined yet, but the details are still under investigation.
