San Bento CISD School Board Secretary Michael A. Vargas, M.Ed., recently attended the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Legislative Conference in Austin, Texas.

“Public education has been under attack from the national and state levels, so as a board trustee for San Benito CISD, I’m committed to making sure that we are protecting public education at the local level,” said Vargas, who serves as a Legislative Advisory Council Representative to the TASB Legislative Committee.

Vargas’ commitment to public education was the driving force behind seeking a seat on the state level TASB committee during his first year as an elected public official in San Benito.

Scheduled when the Texas Legislature is in session, the TASA/TASB Legislative Conference provides school board trustees an opportunity to meet with their respective legislators to discuss critical issues relating to public education.

“Meeting with our State Representatives and Senators is a crucial component in lending our voices to this consequential effort,” explained Vargas.

“It is also reassuring to know that I am not in this fight alone. Advocating for the best educational outcomes for the students of South Texas, alongside other board trustees in the area like Donna ISD, has been very productive,” he added.

The TASA/TASB governmental relations staff also provided conference attendees with an update on legislative activities and proposed bills.

“The Rio Grande Valley should always have a seat at the table during the legislative session, allowing us to be a part of such a crucial conversation,” Vargas said.

The next step for Vargas is to update the local school board and bring awareness to what Austin is doing legislatively and how students’ lives will be impacted.
