HARLINGEN — Chess, cheerleaders and robotics enthusiasts.
They marched together Monday around the track at Boggus Stadium amid great music, magic and general revelry, celebrating Texas Public Schools Week.
Superintendent Art Cavazos, School Board Member Bobby Muniz and other local officials spoke in favor of public schools.
Traci Gonzalez, principal at Rodriguez Elementary, said schools throughout the district sent representatives of various organizations such as student council and marching band to walk in the procession.
“We marched and we celebrated all the great things that public education in the city of Harlingen has to offer,” Gonzalez said.
Texas Public Schools Week gives students and educators the chance to highlight the work being done on their campuses. Monday was the kickoff, but activities throughout the week are being held to observe the yearly event.
For example, today students at Wilson Elementary can fly kites during P.E. class. At Coakley Middle School, parents can eat lunch in the cafeteria with their children, and at both KEYS Academy and Early College High School students can dress in western attire.
“It’s an important way to support public education in the state of Texas,” Gonzalez said. “It’s important for our democracy.”
