HARLINGEN — Growing up a fan of the Harlingen Cardinal football team, Jeriel Cervantes knew he wanted nothing more than to one day wear the uniform for the Red Birds.
Cervantes would go on to play tight end for the Cardinals and was a two-year letterman during his time on the gridiron.
“It was always a dream of mine to score touchdowns and make plays for the Harlingen Cardinals,” he said “I attended almost every single game as a child and I really didn’t want to play for any other team.”
Ironically, Cervantes will now play for another Cardinals team in the near future.
On Friday, Cervantes signed a letter of intent to play football with the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals in San Antonio this fall.
“It’s definitely a blessing to be able to play football at the collegiate level,” Cervantes said. “I mean the feeling is surreal, but all glory to God. Incarnate Word is a great academic school as well and that was my basis on making my decision.”
The Incarnate Word Cardinals are a NCAA Division I football team that competes in the Southland Conference and finished 3-8 last season.
Cervantes wishes to pursue a business and economics degree at UIW and hopefully attend a law school some time afterward.
