Man charged with assaulting Harlingen police officer

HARLINGEN — Police have arrested a man they say assaulted a Harlingen police officer.

At approximately 1:21 a.m. on Thursday, they say the officer saw a suspicious man on the 800 block of East Harrison Avenue. They say when the officer tried to make contact with Carlos Ruiz, 36, of Harlingen, he ran away.

Police say after a brief foot pursuit, the officer caught up to Ruiz and that’s when they say he began assaulting the officer. Police said the officer sustained minor injuries.

According to a department news release, back-up officers arrived on scene and Ruiz was controlled and taken into custody.

He is charged with a third degree felony for assault on a public servant, a class A misdemeanor for evading arrest and a class A misdemeanor for resisting arrest.

His bond was set at $50,000.
