CORPUS CHRISTI — It might have taken a scoreless 100 minutes, but the Harlingen South Lady Hawks are moving on to the third round of the Class 6A UIL playoffs after defeating San Antonio Southwest 1-0 (4-3 in penalty kicks) on Friday evening at Cabaniss Field.
After the Lady Dragons missed back-to-back PK attempts, South sophomore Alise Garza pulled up to the spot and didn’t miss, burying the shot past the Southwest goalkeeper.
“This is just a good feeling,” said Harlingen South head coach Omar Pedroza. “This game was just incredible for us because look at all the fans that came out to support the team.
“Reid Davis made about four or five good saves and kept us in the game, but I already knew that if it came down to penalty kicks I was going to put in Alicia Rodriguez just because of the things that I saw at practice. But we’re just happy to be moving on to the next round.
The Lady Hawks will now go up against a tough McAllen High team in the regional round next week. McHi pounded Brownsville Hanna 10-0 in its area-round match on Friday night.
