MERCEDES — What started as a hobby for Troy Trevino has now become a full-time job.
Trevino, who recently opened his new business Sweet Wraps in Mercedes, offers car wraps with designs for a driver’s marketing services and style needs.
Trevino is one of 20 small businesses now opened or opening soon at the Storage Depot located on Vermont and the expressway frontage road in Mercedes.
The Storage Depot and incubator facility contains 21 incubator retail spaces and six contractor center spaces expected to create 57 permanent jobs for the city.
Some of the mom and pop businesses also getting their start range from a nail salon, business card and printing shop, mobile phone sales, hair salon, smoke shop and more.
And after phase two of the Storage Depot is complete, 200 storage units and approximately 38 retail and contractor center spaces will be available.
The $2.5 million Storage Depot investment project owned by the Drennan Companies, headquartered in Brownsville, is expected to pull in new property tax revenue for the city, school district and Hidalgo County.
“It is the first commercial development in Mercedes since the outlets,” said Hernan Gonzalez, Mercedes Economic Development director. “The Vermont corner is very prominent.”
Trevino, also a Mercedes resident, opened this month.
He has been offering vehicle car wraps services, specialized air suspension and customization auto part installation.
“I love what I do, so why not make a living off of it,” Trevino said.
He said he started doing car wraps at his home garage for friends he met through the local car clubs and car shows.
And when Trevino saw the new storefronts opening up he jumped at the opportunity to start his own business.
He said he was lucky to get this place because by the time he called for rent space they were all booked.
“For the price, it’s given me a little start to open a shop to see if I can make it or not,” Trevino said. “The location is great.”
An incubator is designed to accelerate the growth and success of entrepreneurial companies through an array of business support resources and services that could include physical space, capital, coaching, common services and networking connections.
