San Benito mulls high school cafeteria makeover

SAN BENITO — The high school’s cafeteria could be getting a makeover.

Tonight, during a finance committee meeting, board members will discuss the possibility of a cafeteria redesign.

Specifically, design, décor and furnishings.

They also will discuss the redesign of the cafeteria serving areas, hallway entrance and hallway serving areas.

This project goes hand in hand with the Re-Imagine 2021 five-year Strategic Plan. The plan tackles several topics, including curriculum and instruction, finance, facilities, pre-kindergarten through graduate school, communications and public relations.

The cafeteria falls under the facilities portion. It also aims to tackle other areas of buildings and operations.

Right after the finance meeting, board members will move into a curriculum committee meeting.

There, they will discuss several initiatives including the summer reading program.

In an effort to combat what is known as the “summer slide,” Superintendent Adrian Vega proposed the use of an online library full of books to be used by students in pre-kindergarten all the way through eighth grade.

By using a website called myON, students can remain engaged for the three months they are not in school.

The online database that is used by school districts all over the state allows children to pick and choose what kind of books they want to read.

The website has about 6,000 books, making the children the controller of their summer reading list.

In addition, board members will discuss curriculum writing, summer camp, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program camp and Naviance.

Naviance, a college and career readiness software provider that partners with high schools and other kindergarten-12 institutions provides students with college planning and career assessment tools.

Naviance is a comprehensive K-12 college and career readiness solution that helps districts and schools align student strengths and interests to postsecondary goals, improving student outcomes and connecting learning to life.

Students are using it to keep track of their college plans, transcripts, resumes, portfolios and applications.

While using Naviance, the students can research universities and look into their career options.
