Santa Rosa school leaders to attend Harvard this summer

SANTA ROSA —Principal Sylvia Ramos is heading to Harvard this summer with the Barrera Elementary parental involvement team.

And next year they plan to apply the advanced parental involvement tips they learn to enrich the parent connection at the school and district.

Ramos, Annabel Villarreal and Julie Jones, the parent liaison and academic coach, will travel to Harvard University this summer to learn leading-edge parental involvement strategies.

“We are going to be trained by the best of the best,” Ramos said. “And we are pretty fired up about that.”

They leave on the all-expense-paid training July 23 and return July 29.

The training is paid for through Raise Your Hand Texas Leadership Program.

Raise Your Hand Texas works to strengthen public education.

Earlier this year Ramos with the help of Villarreal and Jones applied for the Raise Your Hand Texas grant to attend the leadership program at Harvard.

They were selected over 700 applicants to participate in the program.

The grant is worth about $22,500.

The program will continue throughout the year with monthly online professional learning opportunities and ends with a leadership symposium in Austin next year.

“This is a tremendous honor to have our staff spend some time at Harvard to learn from top educators in the nation,” said Heriberto Villarreal, Santa Rosa ISD superintendent.

The purpose of Raise Your Hand Texas Leadership Program is to select and invest in the development of Texas school leaders that exhibit the potential to affect significant change at their campus, within their district and across their region.

“We are pretty excited about this opportunity because we are such a rural area, and if we don’t have our parents engaged with their student’s academics we are not going to be successful,” Ramos said.

She said parents should know it’s an open door policy for those who want to find out more on how to help their child with a particular math lesson or if they just want to join them for lunch.

“I want them to feel like this is their second home,” Ramos said.
