San Benito to host first social bike ride

You can get to know your community and neighbors by taking part in the San Benito Social Bike Ride taking place next weekend.

Organized by the Harlingen-San Benito Metropolitan Planning Organization, the ride will begin at 8 a.m., Saturday, May 20 in front of San Benito Municipal Building, 401 N. Sam Houston.

“This is a free seven-mile bike ride that will be escorted by the San Benito Police Department,” said Parks and Recreation Director Art Garza.

He said the group will make a social stop during the ride for rest and refreshments. Everyone is asked to be at city hall by 7:45 a.m. with their bike, helmet and water.

The ride is suitable for families and children 10 years of age or older. it will begin and end at city hall.

The rides were developed by the MPO and are already in place in a number of area cities. They are designed to promote walking, biking and a healthy lifestyle.
