Border Patrol agents stationed in Falfurrias came to the aid of two Mexican migrants in Brooks County on Sunday, after the brothers became lost.

One of the men called 9-1-1 after his brother became sick, according to a statement from the Rio Grande Valley Sector of U.S. Border Patrol.

The brother died before the agents arrived at their location, and Brooks County Justice of the Peace Adela Quintanilla pronounced him dead late Sunday afternoon.

The men had been traveling with a group and had been abandoned by their smuggler, according to the surviving migrant.

The cause of death has not been determined, said Marlene Castro, supervisory Border Patrol agent with the RGV Sector’s public affairs office. She said Sunday’s event marked the agency’s 757th rescue since Oct. 1, 2016.
