New call center opens

McALLEN — Spectrum showed off its new, modern call center in McAllen last week, where the telecommunications company has already hired 250 of the 600 positions it will fill by the beginning of 2018.

The 95,000 square-foot center is the location of the former Kmart on N. 23rd Street.

Representatives at the center are bilingual, servicing calls in Spanish to “make their customers feel comfortable,” Anabel Chavez, vice president of customer owperations, said.

The new jobs are part of Charter’s plan to hire 20,000 employees by returning call center jobs to the United States.

Spanish-speaking customers have usually been served by outsourced call centers, often outside the United States.

The center became a talking point between President Donald Trump and Gov. Abbott at the White House in March.

“Tom will be opening a brand new beautiful call center in McAllen, Texas — you know McAllen, right, good place?” Trump said to Abbott.

“Great place,” Abbot replied.

“I knew you would say that — (laughter),” Trump said.

The Monitor reported on the city of McAllen’s recruitment of the center two months before Trump took office.
