Vela announces $2.25 million federal grant to UTRGV for CAMP services

U.S. Rep. Filemón Vela (D-TX 34) announced this week that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has been awarded $2.25 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP).

The grant will allow UTRGV to recruit, identify and select 45 students who are engaged, or whose parents are engaged, in migrant and other seasonal farm work, who will participate in CAMP, providing them with academic tutoring, peer mentoring, financial assistance and career guidance.

“Student success and educational opportunities are among UTRGV’s core priorities,” UTRGV President Guy Bailey said, “and this grant allows us to continue to recruit, retain and, most importantly, graduate students. “I would like to thank Congressman Filemón Vela, our Congressional delegation, the U.S. Department of Education, and all UTRGV staff members who played a role in obtaining this grant.”

Vela said the funding will play an essential role in providing resources for migrant students.

“It is imperative that we continue to invest in our next generation of leaders, and UTRGV is taking the necessary steps to do so,” he said. “I look forward to continuing my work with them and the Department of Education to ensure students continue to receive access to opportunities such as CAMP.”
