DPS searches for 1988 cold case killer of Rio Hondo teen

The Texas Rangers are trying to solve a nearly 30-year-old murder of a Rio Hondo teen.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is asking for help finding who killed Michael Flores in 1988.

DPS is offering a reward of up to $6,000 for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible if the tip is received before next month’s featured case is announced.

Flores was found dead inside his bedroom on Sept. 26, 1988, in the 200 block of Forrest Street in Rio Hondo.

DPS says the teen got home from band practice about 9:30 p.m., went to his bedroom and began listening to the radio. Others in the home heard a gunshot and found the 15-year-old slumped over with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say whoever fired the fatal shot did it from outside of the house.

To be eligible for the cash rewards, tipsters must provide information to authorities by calling the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477).
