Comic Con expected to draw thousands of fans

HARLINGEN — Hell Boy, Blue Ranger and the voice of Princess Jasmine from Disney are just some of the celebrities who will be in the Valley to meet fans at the South Texas Comic Con Fan Weekend.

“It’s an offshoot of our comic con, and we are bringing down some celebrities and celebrity voice actors,” said Ramsey Ramirez, South Texas Comic Con organizer.

Ramirez, who owns Kaboom Comics in Weslaco, has been organizing the South Texas Comic Con since 2012 and he expects up to 8,000 people to attend.

People will be able to buy collectables and comics, enjoy fans in costume and play video and role playing games.

The time machine from Back to the Future will be on display and Star Wars R2D2 and the 501st Legion: Vader’s Fist will be strolling through the convention.

Throughout the day there will be panel discussions for the fans to talk to their celebrities.

Wrestling fans will enjoy the ongoing matches throughout the day and will have a chance to get a glimpse of Rey Mysterio, former WWE wrestler now signed with Lucha Underground Wrestling.

Another popular masked hero who’s going to attend the Comic Con is David Yost from the original Power Rangers. Yost and former Harlingen residents Chris and Mason Andrade have a designer clothing line of T-shirts and hats called Affirmative that they sell at different Comic Cons throughout the country.

Ramirez said the Power Ranger fans are excited about seeing the Blue Ranger.

Also scheduled to attend is Hell Boy actor Ron Perlman.

“People are excited about him (Ron Perlman),” Ramirez said. “There are a lot of Sons of Anarchy fans that are excited to meet him.”

Perlman is scheduled to be at the convention only today.

Ramirez said a woman came into his Kaboom comic book store and said she is excited to see him because she is a fan of his role in the Beauty and the Beast, a role he played in the 90s.

“Perlman has been in so many things so there are fans from a lot of different fandoms that are excited to meet him,” Ramirez said.
