HARLINGEN — Plans for a $4 million, four-story Homewood Suites by Hilton consisting of 89 rooms have been filed with state regulators.
Construction on the 73,088-square-foot facility is expected to begin Oct. 1 and should be completed in about two years, Hilton officials say.
“The Harlingen, Texas, property is currently slated to open in July of 2019,” said Hilton spokesperson Ursula Ramon via email. “The hotel is still listed in the planning stage. (Opening dates are subject to change). Our system shows that the property is expected to have 89 suites.”
The new Harlingen hotel will be a franchise operation, Ramon said. The owner is Ocean Gate Investments LLC based in Pharr.
Ocean Gate representatives did not return calls seeking comment.
Homewood Suites is an extended stay type hotel, much like the Candlewood Suites just to the west of the new hotel’s location.
The expansion of the hotel industry in Harlingen seems to be arriving at a furious pace.
In addition to the planned Homewood Suites, a four-story, 94-room hotel is planned just down the road between Ed Carey Drive and New Hampshire Street.
The Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott has a price tag of $8.5 million, and construction is schedule to begin this fall.
In addition to those projects, San Antonio-based BC Lynd Hospitality will build a 150-room Hilton Garden Inn at the corner of Brazil Road and Teege Avenue at the site of the city’s new convention center.
Homewood Suites by Hilton is an American-based chain of around 450 hotels in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Most Homewood Suites hotels are independently owned and operated by franchisees, as will be the case in Harlingen.
Homewood Suites competes in the upscale tier of the extended-stay market, along with Staybridge Suites by IHG and Residence Inn by Marriott.
