Zumba in the morning

SAN BENITO — Break out your dancing shoes, its time to Zumba.

The city of San Benito is hosting a Back to School Zumbathon this morning.

Zumba is an aerobic exercise containing dance moves with Latin roots that has been gaining popularity in the past couple of years.

This will be the first year the city hosts a Zumbathon.

Letty Gomez works in community outreach for the city and said she and Monica Ramirez, who works in the school district, came up with the idea of a Zumbathon.

Gomez said the city wanted to raise school supplies for the students.

The city is asking for donations of $10 worth of school supplies such as folders and notebooks to attend the event.

Gomez said the city is not really sure how many people they expect to see at the event but they hope for a good turnout.

“It all depends on the weather,” Gomez said.

Ramirez is set to instruct the group.

According to Gomez, Ramirez works in the school district as an instructor for summer classes.

The event will be held at Stookey Park at 9 a.m. today.

There is no registration required to attend the event.

Residents wanting to attend can show up at the park with school supplies to donate.
