SAN BENITO — In need of gently-used furniture?
The Texas State Auctions will be auctioning off used furniture tomorrow morning.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to La Posada Providencia, an emergency shelter for immigrants and asylum seekers.
La Posada Providencia is a nonprofit organization based in San Benito that has been open since 1989 and helps an average of 400 people a year.
According to its website, the goal of the organization is to assist clients in integrating more quickly into the United States culture.
Sister Zita Telkamp estimates that it costs an average of $600,000 to run La Posada Providencia each year.
The organization runs mainly off donations, fundraisers and grants.
The furniture that will be auctioned off was donated to the organization by ProBAR, a legal firm in Harlingen.
The legal firm recently moved locations and had no need for the old furniture.
“We are grateful to receive this donation and have this auction,” Telkamp said.
Telkamp said the organization is no stranger to ProBAR and has worked closely with the firm for the past 20 years.
“We have housed their clients for a night or sometimes a week,” Telkamp said.
Telkamp didn’t know the total number of pieces that were donated but said five 18-wheelers were needed to move all the furniture.
Money from the auction will be used for operational costs for the next fiscal year.
La Posada Providencia has five full-time employees and 20 volunteers.
Some of its services include providing asylum seekers shelter, food, ESL classes and transportation.
Last year, the organization helped more than 300 people including 172 men, 159 women and 85 children under the age of 18.
