Firefighters washing cars for fire prevention week

LA FERIA — Local firefighters will be using their biggest weapon to help raise money for kids.

Instead of fighting a house fire the community will have an opportunity to see the La Feria firefighters hose mud, dirt and junk off cars and trucks for a good cause.

Vehicle owners can get their car washed by the firefighters for $5 or a truck for $7.

The event will take place Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the La Feria Fire Station located at 115 E Commercial Ave.

“The main goal is to establish funds for fire prevention week,” said David Phinney, La Feria chief. “It is something we are going to do all the time.”

The Fire Prevention Week theme this year is “Every Second Counts.” It reinforces the reason why everyone needs to have a fire escape plan.

Fire Prevention Week takes place next month, from Oct. 8 to14.

Local firefighters will visit area schools to talk about fire prevention.

“We buy fire hats for the kids,” Phinney. “It should be lots of fun.”

La Feria Mayor Olga Maldonado is urging the community to support the local fire department’s community efforts.

“It’s a volunteer fire department,” Maldonado said. “The chief has done an awesome job.”

She said the department responds to fire calls at all hours of the night.

The fire department is also responsible for covering Santa Maria.

“Bring your cars and get them washed by our fire department,” Maldonado said.
