Healthy for the Holidays: Free program aims to help you Maintain No Gain this season

SAN BENITO — Say goodbye to the holiday weight gain.

Maintain No Gain is a free program being offered that aims to help residents maintain their weight during the holiday season.

The initiative is part of the Healthy South Texas pilot program that targets 27 counties in the southern region of Texas.

The free program will help participants stay within two pounds of their original weight from Thanksgiving until New Year’s.

Participants will meet with coordinator Elyssa Davis once a week for no more than 20 minutes.

Davis said meetings would not be long and would be more like check-ins that consist of a weigh-in.

The meeting will be set during lunch.

Participants will be able to run in during a time that is convenient for them.

“My goal is to get a lively group of people to come in every week,” Davis said.

The meeting will include a weigh-in, a quick chat about nutrition and staying active and a demonstration of what to do to keep the weight off.

The seven-week support group challenge aims to help residents become healthy and keep them from falling into the well known winter weight gain.

“I’m very excited.” Davis said. “We’ve already had about 15 people contact us to join the program.”

Davis said it’s not about denying the joys of the holidays but rather finding the balance between consumption and exercise.

“We are trying to increase vegetable and fruit intake as well as encouraging them to exercise,” Davis said.

Healthy recipes will be given out weekly as well as challenges for staying active.

There will be meetings in the San Benito extension office and in Brownsville.

“We want it to extend to the family,” Davis said. “If mom and dad are going on a walk, why can’t the kids come or a grandparent?”

Davis hopes that participants will bring in their families or coworkers to join with them so they can have the support at home and their workplace.
