REWRITING HISTORY: Lady Warriors on verge of another outright league title

SANTA ROSA — When the Lady Warriors volleyball team steps onto the court Tuesday evening against the Monte Alto Lady Blue Devils, it will so knowing it has an opportunity to rewrite the school’s history books by becoming the first group to win two consecutive district championships.

Last season, the team won its first league championship in recent memory and this year the team is looking to double up.

“Knowing we have what it takes to win back-to-back district championships just motivates us that much more for playoffs,” said team captain Mariah Contreras. “We’ve already won a district title (last year) so we want to do more than that; the team wants to be successful in the playoffs and hopefully make a deep run. Winning back-to-back district titles was pretty much expected of us so now all that’s left to do is win from here on out.”

The team already secured a co-district championship, however a win Tuesday against the Lady Blue Devils will give it the title outright.

One reason the team has been successful is due to consistency.

“Confidence, communication and teamwork that the team has shown,” added Santa Rosa head coach Carmen De Leon. “They have learned to trust each other and their abilities as players.”

However, some players have a different opinion as to what has been the biggest reason for the squad’s success.

“Without a doubt, Coach De León,” said Contreras. “She is the one who has kept us together when we’ve had to overcome some obstacles throughout these past few months. Coach knows every single one of us as if we were her own daughters and I feel that is what impacts her determination and commitment to the team.

“Without absolutely any hesitation, she is the primary reason as to why we have been extremely successful this season.”

Tuesday’s regular season finale game against Monte Alto will be held at the Lady Warriors’ gym at 7:30 p.m.
