Cats vs Kats: Rio Hondo hosts Raymondville in key district showdown

The Raymondville Bearkats and Rio Hondo Bobcats put their undefeated district records on the line this Friday when the two face off in the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week.

The Kats (7-0 overall, 2-0 District 16-4A DII) enter the game fresh off a 43-0 rout of Progreso at home last week while the Cats (5-1, 2-0) are coming off a 30-15 road win against West Oso.

With only two games left to play in the regular season after Friday, the winner of this week’s battle will put themselves in prime position to clinch the league championship. Both squads are currently tied with Orange Grove (4-3, 2-0) for first place. Rio Hondo hosts Orange Grove in Week 10 then Orange Grove hosts Raymondville in Week 11.

When the San Benito Greyhounds travel to Brownsville on Saturday night to take on the Hanna Golden Eagles, first place in District 32-6A will hang in the balance. This past Friday, the Hounds (7-0, 4-0) beat up on Harlingen South 48-16 to remain undefeated on the season. Meanwhile, the Eagles (6-1, 4-0) won their sixth in a row with a hard-fought 10-7 victory over Los Fresnos.

Both the Los Fresnos Falcons (4-3, 2-2) and Harlingen Cardinals were handed losses last week and now the two will face off at Los Fresnos on Friday, both hoping to get back in the win column and, at the same time, avoid a two-game skid. The Cardinals (5-2, 3-1) enter the game fresh off a tough 20-17 loss to Weslaco East at home this past Friday.

It’s been a tough season for the Harlingen South Hawks (1-6, 0-4). Despite a season-opening win over McAllen High, the Hawks have dropped their last six straight and are still in search of their first district win. The Green Birds will look to find that victory on Friday when they travel to Weslaco to take on the Panthers (2-4, 1-3), who picked up their first league win of the season this past Friday with a nasty 72-0 win against Brownsville Rivera.

The Lyford Bulldogs host the Santa Rosa Warriors in a key District 32-3A Division I battle on Friday. The Bulldogs ( 4-2, 2-0) are coming off a huge 21-9 win over previously undefeated Bishop. Meanwhile the Warriors (4-3, 1-1) are fresh off a thrilling 13-12 win against Santa Gertrudis Academy.
