HARLINGEN — Discount chain Dollar Tree is preparing to build out its third Harlingen location, this one at 302 N. Ed Carey Dr.
The retail giant has established more than 14,000 stores in the United States and Canada since its founding in 1986 with its first store in Fulton, Georgia.
Dollar Tree has stores in the Lincoln Corners Shopping Center at 21090 W. Lincoln Ave. and at the Peter Piper Center at 302 N. 77 Sunshine Strip.
The new Ed Carey location, which is across the street from Harbor Freight Tools, will be a $162,735 tenant fit-out at the strip mall location.
“We’re very excited that Dollar Tree continues to grow,” company spokesperson Shelley Davis said yesterday.
Davis said the new location in Harlingen will be approximately 10,000 square feet of retail space, and will adhere to the usual Dollar Tree format which is heavy on seasonal and holiday sale items, health and beauty and food and snacks.
“A store this size will employ from 12 to 20 full- and part-time associates,” she said, “although that number will go up seasonally.”
The construction schedule for the tenant fit-out shows crews beginning work on Nov. 1 and winding things up by February 2018, although officials at Davis Equity Realty say no lease on the property has been signed.
While Davis declined to discuss company location strategies in South Texas or elsewhere, she did note Dollar Tree has a number of locations in the Valley, including San Benito, Port Isabel, Weslaco, Brownsville, McAllen, Los Fresnos, Edinburg, San Juan and Elsa.
“We certainly want to be where Middle America is shopping,” she said.
