With the help of numerous donations and several grants, Sea Turtle Inc. on South Padre Island will expand its home to more turtles in need of care by the end of the year.

Sea Turtle Inc. will get a new educational center that will have classrooms, offices and an aquarium that people can walk under and get a first-hand look at the sea turtles.

There is a 500-foot walkway over the Laguna Madre that will connect the current facility — which will be dedicated to a full-blown hospital — to the educational center, where the gift shop will move to as well.

“So now all the medical care for our sea turtles will now happen on site,” Sea Turtle Inc. Director Jeff George said. “Prior it was here and the Gladys Porter Zoo.”

George said the educational center will give the public the opportunity to learn about the wetlands, the local ecology, as well as the wildlife that resides in South Padre Island.

The $6 million expansion was made possible through a number of donations from the public. George said $1.5 million was donated to the expansion by a family that lives in Dallas. The donation was anonymous.

The expansion is expected to open between late December and early January.
