HARLINGEN — Help take a bite out of crime by attending a fundraiser for the HPD Explorers at Chili’s.
The Harlingen Police Department has announced it is inviting everyone to head out to Chili’s Restaurant in town on Wednesday, Nov. 15, in support of the HPD Explorers Post #3077.
Chili’s will donate 15 percent of the sales that day to help support the HPD Explorer program when mentioning or showing the “Give Back Event” flyer upon payment.
“These funds are going to go toward re-registering the kids for competitions year around,” said Jaime Palafox, Explorers police advisor. “It will also go for equipment for training, uniforms and anything they need for training.”
Keep-sake photographs with McGruff the Crime Dog and the Safety Pup and free finger-printing for the kids will be available.
Explorers train just like police officers and go to competitions across the nation.
HPD Explorers train every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Harlingen Police Department.
Age groups to join are 14 to 21 and the students must have completed the 8th grade.
The organization is through the Boys Scouts of America.
“These kids are very dedicated to this program and this is a great cause for these kids,” Palafox said. “A lot of these kids are tying to be federal agents, not only police officers.”
The Explorers train weekly in various scenarios to prepare for competitions.
The group also volunteer regularly at many events the city offers such as National Night Out, directing traffic during Run/Walk Marathons, Blues on the Hill, and the Livestock show.
Recently, members of the Harlingen PD Explorers participated in the Weslaco Border Patrol Law Enforcement Explorer Competition.
“The more training and the more equipment we can get them, the better prepared they will be,” Palafox said. “We are looking for funding to help them out.”
The Explorers competed against 30 teams from around the Rio Grande Valley and around the state recently.
They placed in multiple categories and took first-place honors in four out of six events.
“We ask for you to go for lunch and dinner,” Palafox said. “Chili’s has been kind enough to donate 15 percent of the event day sales.”
