Career success event connects UTRGV students with area HR managers

UTRGV Continuing Education, in collaboration with the university Career Center and the RGV Chapter 390 of the Society for Human Resource Managers (SHRM), held a holiday networking mixer Dec. 13 at the UTRGV McAllen Teaching Site, to introduce graduating seniors to local HR managers.

The event included the annual board member election for SHRM RGV, and the holiday mixer was an opportunity to introduce the student chapter members and other business majors graduating this December to hiring managers from local companies.

Students interacted with professional members of the SHRM RGV chapter, and had a chance to seek career advice during a “speed networking” activity in which each student was paired with a professional for 15 minutes, to discuss their career plan and resume and get timely advice on the “dos and don’ts” of the interview and job-seeking process.

SHRM RGV Chapter 390 serves HR professionals in the Upper Valley. Adrian Aguilar, chapter president, incorporated the speed networking activity into the event.

“We are excited to be partnering with UTRGV to discover new ways to connect students to HR professionals who hold the responsibility of finding the right talent for their companies. Events such as this lend themselves to creating a win-win for both parties,” Aguilar said.

The event included guest speaker Mark Hanna, Realtor, motivational speaker and member of the newly founded ULEAD Network, whose mission is to be a solution-driven organization that discovers leaders and promotes civic engagement.

Hanna shared details about applying to become members of this community-based organization, and advised students to stay focused on their strengths and apply the knowledge gained in college to seek opportunities that utilize their strengths.

UTRGV Continuing Education extends the academic resources of the university to engage the community through non-credit professional development training programs, which include customized training for companies that have specific training needs for their employees.

The UTRGV Career Center provides assistance to undergraduates, graduate students and alumni who seek help in formulating and implementing career plans.
