Nominations for Walk of Fame open

HARLINGEN — Want to recognize someone who has made a difference here?

The Rotary Club of Harlingen will begin taking applications for nominees to be recognized on the Harlingen Walk of Fame located in front of Harlingen’s Municipal Auditorium.

In 2010, the Walk of Fame was first introduced and presented to the city from the Rotary Club in celebration of Harlingen’s centennial birthday.

The club honored 100 residents to represent the 100 years that the city has been around.

Residents from past and present were celebrated with engraved brick pavers including the city’s founder, Lon C. Hill.

Each year since, the Rotary Club has been honoring and inducting a handful of people in the community to the Walk of Fame.

Annually, residents and former residents are nominated for their achievements and their contributions to the city.

According to Kathy Preddy from the Rotary Club, the Club narrows down the nominations as much as possible.

“We are very selective,” Preddy said. “We have to see what the person has done for the city and how they have distinguished themselves and if they have made any significant contributions.”

Preddy said nominees don’t necessarily have to live within Harlingen city limits.

As long as nominees have made a lasting impact in the community, they are eligible for nomination.

“Famous people who no longer live here but are representing our town, anyone that has made any contribution to Harlingen can be nominated,” Preddy said.

The application process includes information about the nominee’s career, volunteer work and impact in the community.

To nominate a current or former resident, applications can be found on the Rotary Club’s website.

The Rotary Club will continue accepting nominations until the end of January and make final selections in February with a presentation inducting the winners in June.
