School races shaping up in Harlingen, San Benito

Time is up and applications are in.

The deadline to be placed on the general election ballot for school board elections was Friday at 5 p.m. and a number of candidates have filed for a seat on the boards.

San Benito

Three seats are up for election in the San Benito school district.

Board president, Michael Vargas has filed to run for his current position on Place 1 and is running unopposed.

Retired teacher, Blanca Sonia Weaver will be running up against college student Fatima Huerta for Place 2 and Place 3 incumbent, Joe G. Gonzalez, will be running against former teacher Juanita Janie Silva.


The Harlingen school district also has three seats up for election.

Place 4 incumbent Bobby Muniz and Place 5 incumbent Nolan Perez will both run unopposed for their current positions.

Muniz has served the board since 2014 and Perez has held his seat since 2010.

Three candidates, however, have filed for the opportunity to replace board president George McShan who has served on HCISD’s Board of Trustees since 1988.

McShan recently announced his retirement from the school board.

Legal assistant, Debbie Flores, Professor Belinda Reininger and retiree Santiago Villanueva have all filed for Place 6.

Early voting will begin April 23 and Election Day will be held on Saturday, May 5.

Timeline for school elections

• Last day to register to vote: Thursday, April 5

• First day of early voting: Monday, April 23

• Last day to apply for ballot by mail: Tuesday, April 24

• Last day of early voting: Tuesday, May 1

• Last day to receive ballot by mail: Saturday, May 5

• Election day: Saturday, May 5
