HARLINGEN — Growing up, Vicky Fultz was a noisy child.
She would run around the house singing and making up noises.
When she turned 5 years old, she began taking voice lessons from a family friend and member of the Philadelphia Opera.
Although she loved singing, her stage freight kept her from auditioning for her school’s choir or joining theater.
“I grew up singing, but I didn’t do much acting until I got into college in the musical theater class,” Fultz said. “I was too shy to try out.”
In college, Fultz joined the music program which would lead to her falling in love with acting.
During her time in college, Fultz and her husband, a fellow actor, found out they were expecting their first child.
They moved from Houston to the Valley to run a pet boarding resort.
She thought she had given up acting for good until the Harlingen Community Theater held rehearsals for “The Beauty and the Beast,” which she and her husband auditioned for.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be given the opportunity to continue acting,” Fultz said. “I didn’t really think I’d be given a chance to do this again.”
Fultz can no longer imagine a life without acting and has found a home with the Harlingen Community Theater.
Now, Fultz can be seen playing Marian the Librarian in the latest production of “The Music Man.”
The show runs this weekend.
Q: What has been your favorite performance?
I’m pretty tempted to say “The Music Man.” It has been so much fun to do this with the people I love. There is so much talent in this show. Everyone’s character is so colorful and fits their personality.
Q: What is the scariest thing about acting?
Having to look at the audience. I didn’t try out for choir in high school because I didn’t want to be out in front of crowds. You have to kind of get over that there are a lot people watching you and remembering how much I love what I am doing and focus on the music and focus on the singing.
Q: What is your favorite part of performing?
I love getting laughs. Obviously, I love the music but I love comedy and getting a laugh.
Q: What is a play you would love to perform?
There are a lot of shows that I would like to do. I would really love to be in “Les Miserables.” It’s just an amazing show. There are also so many great characters in “Les Miserables.”
There are probably five different characters that I would like to do.
• Julie Jordan in Carousel the Musical
• Salt/Villager in Beauty and the Beast
• Ms. Jessell in Turn of the Screw
• Marian the Librarian in The Music Man
