SAN BENITO — On your your mark, get set, paddle away.
Early registration to participate in the Rotary Club of San Benito’s annual Kayak Regatta is open and will continue until April 1.
Kayakers registering before the date will be eligible for a discounted rate of $25 as opposed to the regular registration cost of $35.
San Benito Rotary Club president Alma Ortiz said there is no limit to how many kayakers can register, but the first 50 people to sign up will receive a free t-shirt.
“We should have a better feel on how many will be signing up in the next few weeks, but we are hoping that we have a strong turnout,” Ortiz said.
Other than being 18 years of age or older, registration is open to anyone who loves kayaking.
Participants who don’t have access to a kayak will be allowed to rent one for $5.
“We are encouraging kayak enthusiasts to join us that morning,” Ortiz said.
Racers must provide their own approved life vest and paddle.
The earlier participants register, the earlier race time they will be given.
There are two divisions, one for female and one for male.
Each division will be have prizes for the first-, second- and third- place winners.
Races will begin at 10 a.m. with contestants being timed on completing a total distance of 2,500 feet.
Funds raised from the regatta will go toward the Boys and Girls Club of San Benito to help the organization renovate its facilities.
The organization is also currently looking for more vendors and sponsors to take part in the event.
Ortiz said the club is urging those interested in participating to contact the club.
The deadline for online registration is April 15.
Participants will receive one last change to register on the morning of the event.
