SHOWCASE SHOWDOWN: Lady Hawks, Lady Panthers set for key district battle

Two weeks into the District 32-6A softball season and the Harlingen South Hawks and Weslaco Lady Panthers have proven to be the early frontrunners for the league crown as they are tied atop the standings at 4-0.

Something will give today, however, as the two face off at 7 p.m. at Lady Hawk Field.

Last week, the Lady Hawks got wins over Brownsville Hanna and San Benito while the Lady Panthers beat Harlingen High and Brownsville Rivera.

Later this week the Lady Hawks are at Weslaco East while the Lady Panthers will be at San Benito.

After a disappointing 13-0 loss to Harlingen South on Thursday, the San Benito Lady Hounds (3-1) will look to get back on track Tuesday with a game at Brownsville Rivera. Meanwhile, the Harlingen Lady Cardinals, who convincingly belted Weslaco East 10-3 last week, are at Los Fresnos tonight.

The Harlingen Cardinals (1-1) and Harlingen South Hawks (1-1) split their District 32-6A series last week and are now ready to move on. The Red Birds take on Brownsville Rivera this week with tonight’s game at home and Friday’s contest at Brownsville. Meanwhile, the Green Birds are at Los Fresnos this evening and host the Falcons on Friday. All games begin at 6:30 p.m.

The annual Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association Meet of Champions track & field meet is scheduled to run this weekend. Preliminary heats are set for Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr while the finals will be run Saturday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco. All teams in District 32-6A are expected to compete, including Harlingen, Harlingen South and San Benito.
