HARLINGEN — Dollar General is weighing a seventh location in the city somewhere along West Business 83, state documents show.
The Fortune 500 corporation, which has become one of the most profitable variety store chains in the nation, is considering building a new Dollar General somewhere in the west part of the city.
The company already has two stores in the area, one at 5910 W. Business 83 and another to the north at 2321 Stuart Place Road.
“At this time, we are currently in due diligence phase for a new Dollar General in Harlingen, Texas, that would be located off Highway 83,” said Angela Petkovic, a company spokesperson. “Based on our current timeline, we anticipate to have a final decision on this by fall 2018.”
The $600,000 new construction would be a 9,122-square-foot pre-manufactured metal building in line with existing Dollar General facilities, according to documents filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
A similar situation is occurring in San Benito, where the company is considering locating its third store, somewhere along West San Jose Ranch Road near North Sam Houston Boulevard.
Like the San Benito store, any new Harlingen Dollar General would employ between six and 10 people, Petkovic said.
