Harlingen CISD teachers, administrators, the board of trustees, and staff came together to kick off the 2018-2019 school year during a two-day celebration on Aug. 8-9.

With sounds of the 80s filling the Performing Arts Center, speakers delivered their common message to “Be the Champion for Children.”

Welcoming staff were HCISD’s Administrator for Organizational Development Veronica Kortan, Board President Greg Powers, and Superintendent Dr. Art Cavazos.

Dr. Art Cavazos challenged attendees to take advantage of every opportunity to be a champion for their students.

“To change the world, our kids need to be College, Career, and Community Ready students. Seize every moment to make a difference. Think about the relationships you will form this school year,” said Dr. Cavazos. “Make sure that those relationships leave a lasting impact and a legacy that will never disappear.”

Keynote speakers included motivational speaker and tech guru, Javier Trejo, on the first day of the event and Principal El, an award-winning principal, and internationally recognized speaker, and educator on the second day.

Bringing convocation to a spectacular close were musicians and performers from across HCISD.
