SAN BENITO — Police are asking for help in their search for an SUV believed to be the getaway car in the murder of a 30-year-old San Benito man.
The suspect or suspects who shot Edgar Gonzalez to death in the 800 block of Buena Vida Street at about 6:19 p.m. Feb. 21 were last seen fleeing the area in a white Chevrolet Tahoe, Police Chief Michael Galvan stated in a press release yesterday.
A witness followed the SUV as it traveled south on Sam Houston Boulevard.
Video images show the SUV turning into a neighborhood and exiting Turner Street, the press release states.
“Detectives are still in the process of gathering surveillance video from every business and homes along the route and continue to track its direction of travel,” the press release states.
Galvan is asking business owners to review their video surveillance cameras to determine if they contain images of the SUV.
“We are asking everyone, including businesses, which have video surveillance systems to review their cameras during the time period of 6:15 p.m. and 7 p.m.” Feb. 21.
In an interview last week, Gonzalez’s family said he walked out of the family home on Sombra Street to check on a white Chevrolet Tahoe parked behind their home when he was shot.
He later died in a local hospital.
Galvan declined to disclose any further information.
“We do not want to release any further information that may jeopardize the investigation,” Galvan stated. “Please help us find the person who committed this cowardly act and bring him/her to justice.”
The Texas Rangers, Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI are assisting in the investigation of the city’s first murder since 2015.
Galvan is asking those with information about the shooting to call their local police departments or the San Benito Police Department at 956-361-3880.
All calls will remain anonymous.
