Most cities post strong sales tax gains, but Harlingen drops

HARLINGEN — Most Valley cities posted strong year-over-year gains in sales tax reimbursements for January, the state comptroller announced.

In the region, only Harlingen, (down 3.93 percent), South Padre Island (down 7.78 percent), Mission (down 0.35 percent) and Mercedes (down 9.29 percent) posted slower months than they did a year ago.

In Cameron County, the biggest gainers were Rio Hondo (up 28.25 percent), Los Fresnos (up 13.76 percent), La Feria (up 8.59 percent) and Port Isabel (up 7.35 percent).

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced this week he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $711.7 million in local sales tax allocations for March, 6.1 percent more than in March 2018. These allocations are based on sales made in January by businesses that report tax monthly.

In Willacy County, Lyford was up 19.35 percent and Raymondville showed a gain of 13.91 percent for the month. For the year, both cities are up more than 25 percent over last.

In Hidalgo County, McAllen continued its very good run of retail sales numbers, turning out 8.24 percent ahead of last January. For the year, McAllen is up 10.34 percent.

Elsewhere, Pharr showed a very strong month, up 18.44 percent, and up 22.77 percent for the year.

Weslaco posted a plus 6.23 percent for the month and Edinburg was up 3.24 percent.
