In a morning ceremony, Los Fresnos Falcons defensive end Mathew Ortiz signed his intent to play at NCAA Division III Texas Lutheran University.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to play college football,” Ortiz said. “My eighth-grade coach, Charlie Rivas, told us that if we were planning to play college sports and that’s a way out, that most of us would not make it in athletics. He only believed that only about one athlete in the school would make it. I wanted prove him wrong.
“My first goal is to make the traveling team, and get some reps in the game. I hope to become a starter by my second year.
Ortiz said his mother, Sandy, has been his biggest fan.
“She has always been by my side,” he said. “She has been my rock, and I love her for that.”
