HARLINGEN — Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in the Rio Grande Valley today, as a front moves in from the west.
The weather alert has been issued for Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties where scattered thunderstorms are possible later today.
These storms have the potential to produce large hail, damaging winds and locally heavy rainfall which could cause local flooding.
The storms already were being tracked in the Las Palmas area west of Falcon Dam and the Valley cities of Rio Grande City and Roma were under a watch.
At mid-morning, National Weather Service forecasters reported strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 11 miles west of Las Palmas to 14 miles west of Falcon Dam. Movement was east at 20 to 25 mph.
Half inch hail and winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with these storms.
