SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Several kids will be able to spend the summer learning from local everyday heroes who monitor the vast, open sea.

The City of South Padre Island Fire Department will host tryouts for its 2019 Junior Lifeguard Program May 18 and 19 starting at 10 a.m.

Candidates will meet at the SPI fire station and will then relocate to a pool for a swim test.

From learning about rip currents and how beach safety flags operate to learning CPR and first aid, the summer camp will teach kids multiple aspects of lifeguarding.

To participate in the program, applicants should have an interest in beach environments, must be able to swim two laps, equivalent to 100 meters, without stopping and be able to tread water for five to seven minutes depending on age category.

Applicants will not be charged to try out or participate in the program.

Items such as uniforms, hats, sun block, water and snacks will be provided.

The Junior Lifeguard Program will begin June 3 and will end June 28.

Classes will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon.

Fridays will be an “optional” sports training day that will offer a “more intensive” physical training and competition practice.

Tuesday and Thursday will be an option for divided age groups depending on the amount of kids who try out.

According to Beach Patrol Captain Jim Pigg, about 16 applicants passed the swim test during the first round of tryouts held May 4 and 5.

He believes the junior lifeguard camp is a great first step for those who are interested in eventually becoming South Padre Island Beach Patrol lifeguards.

“This is the start of something I hope continues to happen from year to year,” Pigg said. “Hopefully, we can get kids interested in the program, they eventually become lifeguards and move on from there to become firemen and paramedics.”
