Two arrested in high-speed car chase

HARLINGEN — A 19-year-old male driver of a stolen vehicle was charged May 8 with evading arrest with a vehicle after leading police on a chase, authorities said.

The chase started in Rio Hondo and continued through San Benito and the expressway, according to Texas Department of Public Safety.

The chase ended in Harlingen on Grimes Road when the vehicle went into a wet farm land and became stuck.

An 18-year-old male passenger was also cited with evading on foot, possession of marijuana and tampering with evidence. According to Rio Hondo Police Chief William Bilokury, authorities were notified of a stolen vehicle out of Harlingen earlier in the day.

Rio Hondo police initiated a traffic stop of a suspicious vehicle, but it left at a high rate of speed to San Benito, Bilokury said.

The vehicle then entered Expressway 83 and went back to San Benito and drove toward Harlingen where the car went into the farm field.

No one was injured in the chase.

Multiple agencies were involved in the pursuit including Rio Hondo police, DPS, Cameron County Sheriff’s deputies, Constables Pct. 3 and 5 and San Benito police.
