RAYMONDVILLE — Yolanda Alexandre is fighting the toughest race of her political career.
After about 13 years in office, she faces Joel Garcia in a June 22 runoff for the city commission’s Place 1 seat.
Later today, city commissioners are expected to order the runoff.
In the May 4 city election, Garcia, a correctional officer, received 600 votes while Alexandre pulled 564 votes.
Erica Reyes-Rubalcaba, a businesswoman, fell short with 539 votes.
Commissioners will order the runoff because neither of the two top to vote-getters received more than 51percent of the vote.
During his campaign, Garcia said stood behind the city’s push for new business while calling on the city to develop a “small business organization” to help more residents open mom and pop shops.
Garcia also called on the city to search for grants to expand parks while working to attract new housing.
Reyes-Rubalcaba could not be reached to determine whether she will support Alexandre or Garcia.
