The man who shot and killed himself at La Vista Apartments after police attempted to arrest him Wednesday has been identified as 25-year-old Eloy Antonio Cruz Jr., according to a statement released by McAllen PD Thursday. Cruz’s last known address was Brownsville.

According to a statement released by McAllen police, investigators and agents with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were conducting an investigation into online sexual solicitation of a minor at the apartment complex, located in the 2400 block of West La Vista, when the shooting occurred.

A suspect in the investigation, Cruz went to the apartments at around 4:07 p.m. to meet a person he thought was a minor for sexual purposes, authorities say.

Cruz exited his vehicle and approached the apartments when McAllen police officers arrived and attempted to arrest him, the statement read. He refused the officers’ commands and returned to his vehicle, continuing to resist arrest, according to police.

The statement goes on to state that Cruz attempted to open his vehicle and pulled a handgun from a holster, firing two shots in the air and then once to the right side of his head.

He died at the scene.
