Priest, parishioners plan to run 37 miles for charity

HARLINGEN — Neither the lengthy distance nor Texas’ sweltering weather seems to have gotten in the way of this trio’s goal.

Father Brian Guerrini, 66, an assistant pastor with Queen of Peace Catholic Church, along with parishioners JoAnn Consiglio and Dalyla Jasso-Dean, will attempt to run 37 miles tomorrow as part of their annual run fundraiser.

In its first year, Guerrini and Consigilo ran 35 miles along Highway 107 from the Sacred Heart Church in Edinburg to the Queen of Peace Church in Harlingen.

“That was a really bad year because it was very hot,” Guerrini recalled. “But we finished in about seven and a half hours.”

As a fellow marathon runner, Jasso-Dean began participating in the run the following year.

Donations received from the first two runs were raised for studying seminarians and retired priests from the Sacred Hearts Church.

This year, Guerrini made a different goal for the trio.

“I thought of a new challenge to run all the way around the parish boundaries, which goes through Harlingen, Primera, Combes and close up to Sebastian,” Guerrini said. “So, we’ll see if we can finish and raise money for a good cause.”

As part of the fundraiser, each runner has been gathering donations from the community.

Donations are being raised for social ministries such as its food pantry, clothes closet and emergency assistance for pregnant and young mothers at the Queen of Peace Church.

Guerrini says they plan to start their run at the Queen of Peace Church around 6:30 a.m. and hope to finish by 5 p.m.

“We might even finish within nine hours or so,” Guerrini said. “I’m the oldest of the three and I’m twice the age of the other two so if one of us needs to slow down we’re going to stay together.”

Anyone interested in making a donation may drop it off at the parish office at the Queen of Peace Church.
