HARLINGEN — A partnership between the local Golden Corral and Disabled American Veterans sparked the idea of a new fundraiser, according to Jose Silva, representative of Harlingen’s Golden Corral.
Because of their 18-year partnership and efforts to help the DAV raise funds, a golf tournament will be hosted Saturday, Oct. 26, starting at 9 a.m. at the Treasure Hills Golf Club.
“It is our first year doing it. There are always tournaments for charitable causes, but I had never seen anything for the veterans,” Silva said.
“Every year, we always challenge ourselves community wise to be bigger than we did the previous year. So, this year at the restaurant we installed a military monument outside,” he said.
According to Silva, he plays golf with veterans who said charities do not really host sponsored golf tournaments.
“I approached the management team here, so we started planning it back in April and started getting the word out on social media,” Silva said.
The DAV Chapter 121, which the local Golden Corral works with, is involved and the local American Legion Post, as well.
“We thought we would shoot for 120 golfers, and it exceeded 158. We thought maybe 90 would show up, but everybody wants to be on board,” he said.
Participation in the tournament is closed, but opportunities for sponsoring a team are available and monetary contributions or door prizes are still accepted.
Silva said after the tournament, they will host a breakfast, lunch and buffet dinner on the golf course sponsored by Golden Corral for the award winners.
Those interested in helping support the tournament can contact Silva at 956-421-5817.
